This Cushion Form Engraved is the third of three major Cushion
designs - the first being the "Wire Lugged" Cushion with the 983
movement and the second being the "Round Form" Cushion design
introduced in 1922.
This particular Cushion is a rare
example - it is a "first generation" Cushion Form model utilizing a
987 17-jewel movement. Typically, the "first generation"
Cushion Form's contained the 986A 17-jewel movement and indeed, this
case is marked "987" signifying that the case was specially designed
to hold a 987 movement. The case varies slightly from
"second generation" Cushions
that contained the 987 movement. In
"second generation" examples, the center case
protrudes beyond the bezel and case back to form a stepped case
appearance as in the Cushion Form Opening Engraved example.
The Cushion Form Opening was a
popular style and is honored with one of Hamilton's longest
uninterrupted production runs at seven years. Hamilton produced
65,200 Cushion Form Openings, testament to its enduring and classic
style.
The Cushion Form Opening was offered
in 14K white and green solid gold and 14K green and white gold-filled.
This model was one of six
geometrically shaped wristwatches that were popular up
until the late 1920's. Hamilton's
"Geometric" offerings
spanned ten years - beginning in 1917 with the
0-sized Cushion and ending in 1927 with the Oval.
Included in the geometric models are the Cushion
(0-sized, Cushion Round and Cushion Form Opening), the
Square, Barrel, Tonneau, Rectangular, and Oval.
